What Are The Advantages of Polyaspartic Coatings?

We know, polyaspartic aliphatic polyurea is a bit of a mouthful, but it is one of the rock stars in OBIC’s line of spray-applied coatings. OBIC 1150 is a two-component polyaspartic material with many benefits that make it ideal for a wide variety of applications. These include:

  • Superior chemical & stain resistance
  • Outstanding abrasion resistance
  • Quick curing
  • Excellent adhesive properties
  • UV Stable, resulting in very little loss of gloss or color fade, even when exposed to direct sunlight
  • Resistant to bacteria and humidity, making it suitable for interior application without harmful odors

In-ground pool liner to last a lifetime

First developed in the 1990s, polyaspartic coating systems have been used for many industrial, commercial, and even residential applications. Recently, Midwest Infrastructure Coatings, an OBIC certified installer, had an opportunity to complete an unusual project with OBIC’s polyaspartic coating.

“A customer located in Missouri wanted their new 60’x30’ in-ground pool protected using OBIC 1150,” said Bryon Baker, owner of Midwest Infrastructure. “This was a new pool structure, and the customer wanted a lining system that would last throughout his lifetime.”

Although an ideal project for OBIC 1150, it was not without challenges. “The main challenge we dealt with was in preparing the surface of the pool,” said Baker. This is the most important part of any OBIC project, as it ensures the lining systems adhere properly to the surface.

The main goal of the customer was to invest in a pool lining that would not need to be replaced again, at least not in his lifetime. OBIC installers always aim to meet or exceed their customer’s expectations, and this project was no exception.

To prepare for the OBIC coating system, technicians hydroblasted the concrete around the entire pool until they were certain that they had achieved the right substrate for optimal adhesion. Once satisfied that surface prep was completed, they applied OBIC 1000 as a primer before finishing the job with OBIC 1150. The result? A pool liner with a life expectancy of 50 years or longer.

Where else can you find polyaspartic coatings utilized?

Because polyaspartic coatings are UV stable, they provide ideal protection for any structures exposed to direct sunlight such as pools, fountains, water wells, and other decorative water features. They are also commonly used on above-ground tank exteriors.

Polyaspartic coatings are also useful indoors where they offer a high-performing, exceptionally durable option for protecting the floors in garages, airplane hangars, laboratories, and commercial/industrial kitchens. Although more expensive than the floor coating kits sold in the big box stores, professionally applied polyaspartic coatings also have a longer life expectancy. As Warren Buffet says, “price is what you pay, value is what you get.”
